The rooms are furnished with an abundance of Irish Art from the Lissadell Collection including paintings by David Overend, Douglas Alexander, Wycliffe Egginton and Bingham Mc Guinness.

The plinth in front of the house, with its adjoining lawn, stretches over 140 ft. There are five seating areas surrounding the house, all of which are available for whatever mood suits you:

seclusion by the sea to write your memoirs, compose poetry, gather your thoughts, or simply relax.

You have views across Drumcliffe Bay to Knocknarea, burial place of the legendary Queen Medb of Connaught, famous warrior Queen, and to Rosses Point and Strand Hill.

Our visitors have pedestrian access to all the grounds across the Estate, including the Alpine Gardens.

The views from every single room in ‘Lissadell on the Sea’ are spectacular.

A grass slope leads up to a woodland setting behind and to the West of the house, and will take you to the old lookout Tower from which the Gamekeeper in Lissadell maintained a watch over the rabbits bred in the Burrows, which were a valuable part of the Estate in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Behind ‘Lissadell on the Sea’ is the historic Agent’s House, now in the course of restoration.

A special viewing area measuring over 1,000 sq ft has been constructed to the rear of the house providing an elevated view of sea and mountains on all sides.

Raised Breakfast Patio overlooking Drumcliff Bay and adjacent to the Secret Garden.

There is a delightful sunspot, created from specially selected Kilkenny flamed limestone flags.

Kilkenny Limestone is a tradition at Lissadell, as the floors in the Mansion House entrance Hall, and the imperial Staircase, are constructed from Kilkenny Marble  (polished limestone).

The windows, which were specially commissioned from Breffini Heritage in Leitrim, are made of mahogany, specifically treated to withstand Atlantic gales.

Each window is a picture window, which allows for spectacular views from every room. You will feel like you are living in an Oil painting.

In pride of place in the Kitchen/ Dining Room is the beautiful Lacanche Range, ordered for the house from Burgundy in France.

The Kitchen is equipped with Smeg and Miele domestic appliances and elegant pottery from Portmerion in Wales. Directly outside is a beautiful Kilkenny limestone flagged Breakfast Patio.

Located adjacent to the walled Victorian Kitchen Garden created for the Gore Booth family as a vegetable, herb and fruit garden in the 1840s,

The Garden House at Lissadell was built by Sir Robert Gore-Booth in the 1860s for the use of the head gardener to the Lissadell Estate.

When Edward Walsh and Constance Cassidy acquired Lissadell, it was Eddie who discovered this sleeping gem under acres of undergrowth: the Garden House slumbered, like the secret garden which surrounds the House, for at least five decades, until released from enchantment by Eddie, almost singlehandedly as to the surrounding gardens and sun terrace.

The Garden House is one of the oldest houses on the Lissadell Estate and was the home and headquarters of the Head Gardener, who superintended a huge amount of work and employees needed to service an estate of 32,000 acres and a home farm in excess of 4,000 acres, and the requirements of the Gore- Booth family who lived in Lissadell House.

What we have sought to achieve is the decoration of this house in the Victorian style, but also paying homage to the later Bloomsbury Group era, as many of this set were friends contemporaries of Countess Markievicz, formerly Constance Gore-Booth.

The decorations include light fittings by Tiffany: Louis Comfort Tiffany founded the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company in 1885.  Tiffany drew inspiration from ancient roman glass when creating coloured glass designs without the use of paint or enamel.  Many of the most popular Tiffany lamp designs resemble trees, with the detailed bronze bases, stands and shades representing the roots, trunks and canopy.  Many of the shades also feature a regularly shaped or scalloped edging to further resemble things like flower petals, insect wings and other natural forms.

Eddie and Constance also pay homage to the particular situation of the Garden House adjacent to the Victorian Kitchen Garden created by Sir Robert Gore-Booth in the 1840s and also to the newly created garden, planted by Eddie, in the old secession beds, which also functioned as the base of the ancient glass houses.

Tiffany lighting was designed, manufactured, and became popular before and during the Bloomsbury Group Era when Constance Markievicz mixed and mingled with artists, poets and other luminaries in the early 1900s, when studying art at the Slade.  The Bloomsbury set included writers, intellectuals, philosophers and artists such as Virginia Woolf, William Morris, Rennie Mackintosh, Æ, Althea Gyles, Oscar Wilde, Dante Rossetti, E.M. Forster, Lytton Strachey, Clive Bell, John Maynard Keynes, Leonard Woolf, Stephen Tomlin, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant amongst others.

ACCOMMODATION:

The magnificent Master Bedroom

has views over the old secession houses, and the new garden created within those beds, which adjoin the Victorian walled garden.

The Two further Douuble Bedrooms enjoy fabulous views towards Drumcliff Bay.

TheOpen Plan  Kitchen / Dining room

is a lovely large airy space: in pride of place is the Lacanche premium-range stove, a must for all serious cooks.

The Luxurious Study and  Living room have open fireplaces,

which create the perfect relaxed atmosphere.

The house is in a beautiful setting and surrounded with separate lawn areas, a 3,000 sq.ft. sun terrace which is a veritable suntrap, and highlighted by the Donegal gravel quartz drives.

The wallpapers and blinds/curtain material that you will see are from designs by William Morris (1834 – 1896) who had a profound influence on interior decoration throughout the Victorian period.

The paintings in the Garden House are from the Lissadell Art collection assembled by Edward Walsh, including paintings by Dante Rossetti, Seán McSweeney, T.P. Flanagan, Mark O’Neill and David Overend.

The entire of the house, both exterior and interior, is painted in colours from the Farrow and Ball Heritage range.

The magnificent Celtic knot stain glass windows were designed by Enda Clarke of Gecko Glass in Rathcormac, Co Sligo, and inspired by Leonard Cohan, the great singer -songwriter who played at Lissadell in 2010.

Eddie, Constance and Constance Elisabeth Jnr have been involved in every detail of the design for this beautifully restored comfortable house. Eddie singlehandedly created the marvellous new rose garden and beautiful flower beds all surrounding the house

Private access to the Lissadell Strand is a short walk through the Estate.

The heating is a combination of electrical and infrared, especially commissioned for the house by PowerRite.

As the fireplaces are very small, we recommend that you put no more than two appropriately sized logs in the fire basket.

HISTORY:

The Castle at Ballytarsna was constructed by Sir William Hackett as a home for his family during the late 15th century.

The Castle remained occupied until the year 1655 when the Hackett family were ousted by the British Parliamentarian forces during the ‘Wars of the Three Kingdoms’.

It was during this brutal conflict that the castle fell into disrepair and subsequently had remained in a derelict condition until modern times.

The extensive restoration process to the Castle was undertaken by the  previous owner over a eleven-year period which commenced during the late 1990′s.

The castle has three flights of stairs – both spiral and straight mural stairs, all of limestone and forming an integral part of the structure. There are 55 steps in total. The stairs survive all the way to the walkway at the original roof level of the castle.

Renovations

The wall tops were consolidated in their current state and a new metal guard rail was constructed on the North West corner. A new glazed roof was concealed behind the existing parapets and lead flashing was used to weather the wall walks. This glass roof gives diffused light to the main living area on the second floor. A new floor was put in on this level over the original vault.

On the first level, a new Oak floor was put in on the existing wall corbels to create a bedroom. There is a WC on both the first and second floors in the existing mural passages New bronze casement windows were inserted to all existing openings. The renovations have been done in a manner that has retained the building’s historic character, integrity and charm.

Cloonee House, which was finally completed in 1757, was built as a hunting lodge on the shores of Lough Carra for the Browne family of Westport House.

The house and attendant grounds were designed, in classic country-house style, by Richard Cassells, architect of Westport House, Powerscourt and Leinster House.  Cassells, who was one of the leading architects of the Georgian period, was a keen fisherman and was captivated by Lough Carra and Lough Mask, two of the finest fishing lakes in Ireland.

The Cloonee House demesne originally consisted of about 500 acres and was fully walled with a gate-lodge, boat house, walled garden and orchard. Along with the fishing, deer, pheasant and duck would have been hunted on the grounds in those days.

The symmetry of the landscaping with its fine balance of undulating and mature beech woodland was also designed to be appreciated from the perspective of the lake itself, ‘the lake fisherman’s point of view’.

Cloonee House is a rare and still well preserved example of a designed landscape surrounding a house of deceptive Georgian simplicity.

Famous for its peace, seclusion and tranquillity it is approached via a long sweeping driveway through a wood. Lines of mature beech trees run from the gardens to the east and west of the house directly to the lakeshore.

The beech trees frame the lake ensuring a spectacular view over rolling pastures from the steps of the house. Nowadays the house and attendant grounds are strictly protected structures.

Social and Literary Associations;

Cloonee House was used as a hunting lodge by Lord Altamont until 1810 when it was further extended with the addition of two fine wings including a ballroom.

The house then passed into the ownership of the Blake family (the Blakes who were Catholic, are honoured among the tribes of Galway). There were a number of other big houses in the Lough Carra and Lough Mask area during the 18th and 19th centuries including Moorehall, the home of John Moore, MP and ‘First King of Connaught’, and George Augustus Moore (1852-1933).

Novelist, artist and founder of the Abbey Theatre, George Augustus Moore, was born on the other side of Lough Carra in Moorehall, and although spending much of his adult life in Paris and London frequently returned for extended sojourns.

George Moore met his future wife Mary Blake at a function in the ballroom of Cloonee House, her family home. Moore’s famous novel ‘The Lake‘ is set at Lough Carra and refers to Cloonee House as a ‘haven for birds and tranquillity’.

The owners of Cloonee House (The Blakes) and of Moorehall (The Moores) and other such Irish families of the area including the Wildes of Moytura House (near Lough Mask), socialised and entertained each other in their lakeside houses regularly. There are many contemporary accounts of the summer ball season and garden parties by the lake at Cloonee House.

Guests would travel between functions by boat as well as by carriage. In those days the winters were more severe. Lough Carra would often freeze over and social visits between the big houses in winter could be facilitated by ice-skates and ice-sleds!

Oscar Wilde was at school between 1864 and 1871 at Portura Royal School in Enniskillen, spending the summer months at Moytura House. According to various biographies, the Wilde brothers played with the young George Moore at Moorehall and at Cloonee House during the summer holidays.

Lady Augusta Gregory, patron of WB Yeats and a founder of the Abbey Theatre, was a member of the Persse family of Roxborough House. She was related through marriage to the Blake family of Cloonee and was a frequent visitor to Cloonee House. The other founder of the Abbey Theatre, Edward Martyn of Tulira Castle near Loughrea, was a regular guest of George and Mary Moore at Moorehall and at Cloonee House.

The Moore, Blake and Wilde families, their descendants, relatives through marriage, friends and associates were part of the major social, cultural and political history of Ireland, not least the Irish cultural and literary revival.

It is known that DH Lawrence spent some months at Cloonee House in 1919 as a guest and availed of its peace and tranquillity to write part of his novel ‘Women in Love’.

A more recent owner, Major Ruttledge, wrote the definitive ornithological text ‘Birds of Ireland’ while living there. The grounds of the house are a natural wildlife and bird sanctuary and Ruttledge was a familiar sight to locals scouting the lakeshore with his binoculars and notebook.

The Present Day

Today the house, grounds and demesne of Cloonee House are intact after 250 years.

Most of the old Cloonee House Demesne is now in the hands of Coillte and is utilized for forestry. Sheep and cattle farming continues on the remaining lands just as in 1757, and the pastoral simplicity and character of the Georgian designed landscape has been preserved. Coming through the long driveway through the woods on the approach to Cloonee House is like returning to a bye-gone era.

There is an immediate feeling of being in two centuries at once. The modern world does not intrude in any way. From the current gateway of the house the driveway sweeps around dramatically with unimpeded views of the lake directly ahead and to the right, all framed by magnificent beech trees which stretch from the gardens of the house to the lake as Cassells designed it.

About Lough Carra

Lough Carra, which extends for over 9km along its long axis, lies to the north-east of Lough Mask, in the Corrib catchment. It is one of the best examples in Ireland of a hard water marl lake. It is a shallow (mean depth 1.5m, max depth 18m), predominantly spring-fed lake with only a few streams flowing into it. It is connected to Lough Mask via the Keel River. Lough Carra is classified as a mesotrophic system.

Its well-known pellucid green colour is due to calcareous encrustations. The lake has a high indented shoreline (over 69km in length) and is fringed by a diverse complex of limestone and wetland habitats. There are extensive areas of limestone paving near the shoreline comparable only the Burren.

The wetland habitats include both Great Fen-sedge, fen and alkaline fen. A rich diversity of flowering plant occurs in the fen communities. In addition to the fen habitats, there are widespread reed swamps, wet grassland and some freshwater march communities around the lakeshores. There is a good scattering of small islands within the lake.

The lake and shoreline is a highly significant ornithological site, both in winter and summer. It supports nationally important wintering populations of Shoveler and Gadwall, along with a range of other species including Wigeon, Teal, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Pochard, Lapwing, Little Grebe and Great Crested Grebe. Lough Carra supports a population of Mallard of national importance.

The lake provides excellent habitat for Otter, a species that is listed on Annex II of the E.U. Habitats Directive. White-clawed Crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes), a species that is also listed on Annex II of this directive, has been recorded from Lough Carra.

The lake and lakeshore area has been designated a Special Area of Conservation under the EU Habitat Directive.
